Some Golf Stuff

I have to confess, I am quite the avid golfer.  That's not too unusual, but what is more unusual is my interest in the game itself.  The art of golf course design is something that I find fascinating, and as such, I always find it interesting to find an article like this which provides a new perspective and new ideas.  In this case, the article is about uphill par 3's, a type of hole one does not see often and one thinks about even less.  Downhill par 3's are more picturesque and it is nice to see where your ball lands, but variety is nice too.  It's more difficult to spin the ball into a green above you, which personally I think is nice.  Too often I've only had to hit one type of shot into a par 3, and you know, it gets dull sometimes.  The article points out that an uphill hole presents more shot options, which is certainly a plus.  The fact that you can't see your ball land is a powerful psychological tool, and I know from experience that blind shots really do bother some people.  In addition, a green above the player allows for more visually intimidating hazards, and since bunkers these days give little fear to good players, making hazards catch the player's eye more will affect their shot.  All in all, the article was an interesting insight into a type of hole that you don't see too often.  Par 3's lack variety, and this points out another way we could make them more interesting.
