How I Met Your Mother Finale Thoughts

So, after nine years, How I Met Your Mother (that's gonna get real annoying to type) is finally over.  I have to admit, I haven't been watching it for that long.  Actually, it hasn't even been much more than a year.  I think it was over Christmas break in 2012 that I first watched it, my family had gotten into it recently and when I came home for break, I watched some of it too.  I liked what I saw, but I was several years behind.  Luckily, Netflix is a thing, and they had all the seasons that had been completed up to that point.  So, I watched the entire series in the stretch of about 2 or 3 months.  That is the style nowadays, binge watching.  It is a really good show, one of my favorites.  So, that brings us back to tonight, and the finale.

Aaaand...I'm actually not sure what I think about it.  I mean, it was good in a lot of ways, but everything moved so fast.  There was so much to get through to get the characters from where they were to where they needed to be at the end.  And the whole building up the meeting with the Mother and then just having her die off six years before 2030 was really kind of mean.  I could see it coming, and it allowed the story to tie itself together, but it was not nice.  All in all, I liked the finale, but I think it just tried to bite off too much in too short a time.

Rainy Days

I'll say this about the rain, at least it isn't snow.  But boy, nothing makes me feel lazier then seeing a big mass of rain on the radar, cause I know that I'm gonna be sitting inside all day, just watching TV or playing video games.  And hey, rainy days are the only kind of days where you're forgiven for sitting around the house doing nothing.  Whenever it snows you're obligated to go out and shovel the sidewalk, and nobody enjoys that.  I guess plenty of people go out and play in the snow too, but that hasn't been my thing in a while.  There was one snowstorm that came with a bunch of ice, and it created absolutely incredible sledding conditions.  The only things that could stop you were actual physical obstructions.  It was so slick my younger brother managed to get down the hill using nothing but his feet.  After that, sledding was just no fun.  I don't know exactly where I'm going with this, because frankly my brain never really turned itself on today.  Today was a lazy day, and that's okay.

Writing Tips #3

This is a useful thing I recently picked up recently while looking at magazines for publishing.  I found one magazine that only published short stories that were fewer than 420 characters.  Yes, characters, not words.  You can see one that I did here.  It's actually a pretty interesting idea for practicing your writing.  Writing a coherent story with a definitive beginning, middle and end in so short a space really helps you cut through all the crap you would normally write.  We all do it, throwing in lots of fluff because it sounds good.  With so few words, you have to cut right to the point, and I actually kind of liked writing like that.  It was fun, and I would recommend it to any writer.  It helps.

Team Fortress Tuesday #13

I've got a couple of subjects for today.  First off, I want to talk about name and description tags.  Now, I like them.  I've certainly used my fair share, and I think they're a good thing.  You get to show off your creativity, your interests.  Most of mine are Shakespeare-related, with a few other famous quotes thrown in.  They're nice, they give a little bit of individuality to my stuff, they make my otherwise identical items different.  Unfortunately, most other item names are, frankly, terrible.  They're all just variations of "I killed you", or "I'm better than you".  Some are a bit more creative than others, but they all seem to conspire to make the opponent feel worse about themselves.  I know that it's the internet, and you just have to expect this sort of thing, but it's seriously everywhere.  I guess I just hoped that people were a little better than that.  So, if you're reading this and you're thinking about renaming your TF2 items, don't add insult to injury.  Be a better person.

So, second thing is a big charity event that is happening this weekend called Tip of the Hats.  It's hosted by the competitive TF2 community, and it benefits a camp meant to help children with cancer.  Last year, it raised $35,000, and this year should be even bigger.  It's taking place this weekend, and here is their website, along with information about all the events.  I know I'll be tuning in to watch, it should be a fun time.

Ultra Short Story

A woman smiles at a man across a crowded bar.  She tossles her long brown hair, adjusts her tight black dress.  She sees into his hazel eyes and she admires his shirt.  She likes that movie too.  She watches him stare at his phone.

A man stares at his phone.  He reads the words of friends with happier lives, wishes it for his own.  He sees the bright screen in the dim room and he thinks about his shirt.  He could go for that movie now.  He misses the smile across the room.

Good News, Everyone!

I haven't exactly been posting up a storm here.  So, sounds like a great time to launch even more blogs!  Hooray...?  Seriously though, I've never been entirely sure what this blog was about, because I didn't want to write just about one subject.  I have a lot of interests, and just writing about one thing would have been boring.  So, I've decided the solution is create new blogs and devote them entirely to one subject.  This blog will still be around, and it's still going to be full of different things.  But, you won't be finding any more posts on golf or science here.  Everything that isn't that, you can find right here.  Oh, and I've got a Twitter now, so I'll put that link here too.  Isn't this exciting?

Titles are Stupid

http://grantland.com/features/dan-jenkins-pga-majors-masters-ben-hogan-golf-sports-writing/

This is a really interesting article about Dan Jenkins, one of the most important golf writers ever.  I haven't read much of what he's written, but after reading this article, I think I'm going to start.
