Beer of the Week

The beer: Honey Bourbon

Brewed by: Red Shedman Farm Brewery and Hop Yard, Mt. Airy, Maryland

Description (from Untappd): "Our signature Honey Rye beer aged 4 months in a Bourbon barrel."

Would I buy it again?: As you might expect from a beer aged in a bourbon barrel, this is quite a heavy, thick beer. It tasted very good, with a pleasant amount of honey thrown in, so I would buy it again, but it's not the sort of beer you can throw down. I wouldn't buy it very often.

Beer of the Week

The beer: Holiday Cookies Porter

Brewed by: Red Shedman Farm Brewery, Mount Airy, Maryland

Description (from Untappd): "Our unique holiday porter that has as much chocolate, ginger, spices and cheer as we could fit in a can. Just in time, too!"

Would I buy it again?: I think I would have liked this beer if it weren't for the ginger. I just don't understand why so many of these winter beers have ginger in them, cookies don't have ginger as far as I know, why is Christmas-themed beer so fond of it? I'd give this one a pass

Beer of the Week

The beer: Pumpkin Oktoberfest

Brewed by: Red Shedman Farm Brewery, Mt. Airy, Maryland

Description (from Untappd): "A true Oktoberfest malt combination with 140 lbs of fresh pumpkin. Mildly spiced for the holiday season"

Would I buy it again?: When I saw that one of my local beer distributors was selling crowlers of a pumpkin Oktoberfest beer, I knew I had to get it. I'm sure Red Shedman aren't the first people to combine the two definitive styles of fall beer, but I've never seen it before. Unfortunately, I was left a bit disappointed. There's a little bit of pumpkin flavor, but it's more an Oktoberfest with a hint of pumpkin, rather than a true marriage of the two styles. I think if you were offered it without being told there was pumpkin in it, there's a good chance you wouldn't even realize. Was it bad? No, it was a perfectly fine Oktoberfest. But I think the search for a true pumpkin Oktoberfest continues.
